On a typical night, Middletown guard Kate Fitzpatrick fills her stat line with transition buckets and deep drives down the lane. However, this was the 5-5 senior’s moment to script anyway she wanted. Needing just 5 points to become the Blue Raiders’ all-time leading scorer, Fitzpatrick landed 32 points Tuesday to lead Middletown to a 49-31 victory at Milton Hershey. Fitzpatrick’s history-making performance included eight 3-pointers, the last coming in the final period before her triumphant exit with 4:59 to play. She netted 15 points by halftime and 13 in the third period, when Robert Pelletier’s squad used a 20-6 run to put the Spartans on ice. The moment of celebration came early, with Fitzpatrick nicked on a 3-point attempt at the 4:36 mark of the first period. Her first two conversions gave her a share of the record (1,586) with Ja’Lynn Burton-Jones, who attended Tuesday’s Capital Division clash. The Millersville recruit now sits at 1,613 career points. “It was definitely a special night,” said Fitzpatrick, who came in averaging 25.6 points per outing. “[Burton-Jones] is definitely a mentor to not just me but to many young kids in the area. Her text before the season definitely motivated me the most.” Pelletier said Fitzpatrick’s work ethic is what afforded Tuesday’s moment. “I’ve been doing this for a long time and I still have yet to have somebody that works that hard consistently. She’s constantly coachable, you now, and she’s a general force on the floor, obviously,” Pelletier said. “She does what she can to make other people better. I think she’s a great basketball player but she’s an even better person.” Fitzpatrick posted her team’s first 12 points as Middletown (5-15, 4-8) opened a 14-7 edge after eight minutes. Later, buckets by Amanda Lee, Makayla Claggett and Jordyn Dupes helped increase the Blue Raiders’ advantage to 25-16 at intermission. Fitzpatrick’s 13 points, coupled with 5 points from Nakia Scott, in the third sealed Middletown’s win. Fitzpatrick was 10 of 19 from the floor but 8 of 10 from beyond the arc. “She usually gets a lot of her points on the break, but she was hitting 3s tonight,” Pelletier said. “You’ve got to worry about her otherwise, but when she’s hitting 3s you really have to worry about her.” Spartans’ forward Allison Keith paced her club with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Abby McClatchy chipped in 6 points, and Cheyenne Rodgers 10 rebounds, for Milton Hershey. Scott added 7 points for Middletown, which will close its season Friday at Lower Dauphin.
